It’s a win-win situation for parents when the children are learning and enjoying themselves at the same time.
Across from a century old pumping station, Scienceworks is an interactive museum aimed to make science an adventure for children. With a mixture of permanent and temporary exhibitions, there are plenty to explore for the little ones. Standard museum entry is free for children between 3 and 16, however accompanying adults will be required to pay an entry fee.
Optional packages for the Lightning room, Planetarium and some special exhibitions and shows are also available as addons.
Each section of the musuem has a good collection of activities for the kids to explore and play. However, it does get crowded on weekends - so be prepared for a bit of a wait for the more popular attractions, or try and make a weekday outing if possible.
The Lightning room is a must do for first-timers as it offers a 30 minute spectacular show that is informative and electrifying! The star of the show is none other than the giant Tesla coil, capable of generating 2 million volts to produce three metre lightning bolts.
Due to the high voltage demonstrations, children ages 6 and above are recommended.
The Planetarium offers a 16 meter domed ceiling projection system showcasing a half and hour pre-recorded audio-visual demonstration.
The permanent exhibitions are also tons of fun for the little ones. Sportsworks offer snowboarding simulators, height / weight / flexibility scales, soccer goalie tryouts and more. But without doubt, the fan favorite is the running challenge racing against Cathy Freeman on the field.
Ground Up: Building Big Ideas, Together is a permanent exhibition for toddlers up to 5 years old, full of lights, switches, puzzles and sounds. This area is aimed to encourage sensory discovery and construction play for the younger ones.
There are always more things to entertain at Scienceworks with each visit, as their array of temporary exhibitions on offer are always changing.
